Warren Snow of Envision New Zealand is one of the countries foremost authorities on industrial and household waste and packaging. He runs an environmental and local economic development consultancy providing advice and support services for communities and businesses working towards sustainability.
In our Western society, when it comes to waste management there is a general silent adage of: "out of sight out of mind" and we don't want to know anything about it. Also, being un-glamorous, and lacking any sex appeal, both government and business, see it as something that has to be dealt with swiftly and efficiently, with a quick fix being the optimal result.
Hear how innovative, conscious waste recovery centers are endeavouring to get community business's up and running to recycle and find ways for waste minimisation at the same time, give local employment and become successful enterprises.
Also, hear that NZ was one of the leaders in waste management 30 years ago and find out how we have decided on colossal land fills that have no guarantees as to their longevity as the quick solution. Yet as a country we are one of the top 5 countries in waste per capita on earth.
Adrian Butler is chairman of the World Fire Safety Foundation. The Foundation is a non profit global organisation, dedicated to saving lives by exposing the defective nature of the *type* of smoke alarms installed in homes around the world and promoting the safe and affordable alternatives.
Overwhelming evidence proves that ionization smoke alarms that use radio active components are not safe because they do not detect smouldering fires, the type of fire that commonly kills.
The Foundation's website provides evidence of fire-fighter and scientific testing that exposes the existing flawed standards testing, that has allowed ionization smoke alarms to be certified as safe and sold to the public for over forty years.
It is estimated that tens of thousands of people have been injured or killed globally as a direct result of ionization alarms failing to sound a timely warning.
Since April 2004 new legislation requires that certain Australian commercial buildings must install photoelectric smoke alarms in all sleeping areas and exit paths. Despite Standards Australia having now acknowledged that the testing of ionization smoke alarms is flawed, the change to the standard affecting homes continues to be blocked, without justification, putting Australian and New Zealand lives at needless risk.

Zelka Grammer on GE Free Northland and working towards becoming GMO Free.
A mighty shift in how people-power can wrest control away from unconscious central government and place it back in the hands of localised community and conscious consumers is taking place here in Northland, New Zealand.
Not since the heady days of the mid 1980’s when localised groups and councils ‘made’ Nuclear Free Zones across this country, have we seen such a resurgence as ordinary and extraordinary NZer’s through dedication and vision, mobilise to make Northland, NZ a GMO Free Zone.
Listen to an impassioned Zelka Grammer on how GE Free Northland with the help of Maori Iwi, localised growers and supporters plus District Councillors are investigating local options for regulating or prohibiting GMO land use in the Northland Peninsular.
The recent High Court ruling that has overturned ERMA's (Environmental Risk Management Authority) decision to accept applications from AgResearch to release GM animals throughout New Zealand is another step towards sanity and keeping NZ’s prized ‘Clean Green’ image from being tarnished by unethical procedures.

What society would buy toxic waste that is banned in Europe and especially from the country of origin, Belgium and then drip feed it into 60% of another countries public water supply? If that was done to you in your country would you be outraged?
Well, you may have to experience this feeling, because the FANNZ spokes people state that this is happening to the people of NZ. That we are paying Belgium for their toxic waste and we are basically sabotaging the health of the local population here.
Meanwhile, the two main supporters of fluoridation in the USA, the American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control warn not to use fluoridated water for infant milk formula. This message is not been communicated to parents here in NZ.
Listen to a very revealing interview about the state of our drinking water in 60% of NZ homes. With the Department of Health aiming to have more fluoridation be piped into more kiwi dwellings.

On October 2, 2009 to January 2, 2010 The World March will encircle islands, continents and our planet, beginning in Aotearoa New Zealand on October 2, 2009, the anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, declared the “International Day of Nonviolence” by the United Nations.
It will conclude in the Andes Mountains (Punta de Vacas, Aconcagua, Argentina) on January 2, 2010. The March will last 90 days, three long months of travel.
Why?
Because we can end world hunger with 10% of what is spent on arms. Imagine how life would be if 30-50% of the arms budget went toward improving people’s lives instead of being used for destruction.
Because eliminating wars and violence means leaving human pre-history behind and taking a giant step forward in the evolution of our species.
Because in this aspiration we are accompanied by the strength of the voices of hundreds of prior generations who suffered the consequences of war, and whose echo continues to be heard today in all those places where it continues to leave its sinister trail of dead, disappeared, disabled, refugees and displaced.
Because a “world without wars” is an image that opens the future and seeks to become reality in every corner of the planet, as violence gives way to dialogue.
Globally humanity is mobilising, for at heart we are realising that if we do not consciously take the power of the people into our own hands and set and shape ours and our childrens future, then it quite possibly will be forced upon us by outside forces. (e.g the Super City).
To be honoured as the only Nuclear Free country on earth, this is a celebration that all NZers can rejoice and support whole heartedly.
